More about Cristobal
Born in Havana in 1971, his career began in the early 1990s as he documented the social and political transformation of post-Soviet Cuba. His humanistic lens and fearless pursuit of truth led him from the streets of Havana to the staff of Bohemia, Cuba’s most iconic magazine, and later to global recognition.
Renowned for his courageous photojournalism, he made headlines with his unprecedented images of Fidel Castro’s physical decline, captured in moments the regime sought to hide. These images, along with projects like Cuba Dura, reflect his unwavering commitment to documenting political realities, even at personal cost.
His work has been exhibited in galleries, collected internationally, and featured in prominent curatorial platforms such as Aluna Art Foundation’s Focus Locus. Equally at home in conflict zones and quiet cultural spaces, Herrera-Ulashkevich brings a sharp eye and deep empathy to every subject he approaches.
